I hope the author doesn't mind that I reprinted this heartening first hand account of how communities come together in times of trouble and how the nanny govt screws things up.... rich g

Here’s some stories you won’t hear about the Tri-county fire in Montgomery, Grimes, and Waller County the weeks following Labor Day, 2011. Although Kenna promises to write a book.

My neighbor across the road has a sister named Kenna. Memorial Day, when she saw the huge column of smoke over our homes, she left a birthday party at my neighbor’s house to meet with her friend Tara at the Baseball complex in Magnolia. She called the owner of the complex and got permission to use the warehouse there as a staging area for donations for the fire fighting effort.

They put a notice out on facebook that they were going to be taking donations on their facebook pages. That night as they were setting up tables and organizing, News 2 Houston came by and saw the activity, investigated and left with the phone numbers and a list of suggested donations. The facebook notice propagated faster than the fire. By dawn they had 20 volunteers, bins, forklifts, and donations were pouring in. I stopped by with my pitiful little bags of nasal wash and eye wash, and was amazed.

There must have been 20 trucks in the lot, offloading cases of water, pallets of Gatorade, and people lined up out the door with sacks of beef jerky, baby wipes, underwear, socks, and you name it. School buses and trailers from many counties around were there offloading supplies, students forming living chains to pass stuff into the bins for transport to the command center and staging areas. If the firefighters had requested it, it was there. What do you give the guy out there fighting the fire that might engulf your home? Anything he or she wants. Including chewing tobacco and cigarettes.

Kenna moved on to the Unified Command Post at Magnolia West High school . She looked at what the fire fighters needed, and she made calls and set it up.

Mattress Mac donated 150 beds. Two class rooms turned into barracks kept quiet and dark for rest.

The CEO of HEB donated 2 semi trailers full of supplies, and sent a mobile commercial kitchen at no charge to feed all the workers, but especially our firefighters, 3 hot meals a day.

An impromptu commissary was set up, anything the firefighters had requested available at no charge. As exhausted firefighters (most of them from local VFDs with no training or experience battling wildfires) and workers came into the school after long hours of hard labor, dehydrated, hungry, covered with soot and ash, they got what they needed. They were directed through the commissary, where they got soap, eye wash and nasal spray, candy, clean socks and underwear, and then were sent off to the school locker rooms for a shower. HEB then fed them a hot meal and they got 8 hours sleep in a barracks, then another hot meal, another pass through the commissary for supplies to carry with them out to lines, including gloves, safety glasses, dust masks and snacks, and back they went.

One of the imported crew from California came into Unified Command and asked where the FEMA Powerbars and water were. He was escorted to the commissary and started through the system. He was flabbergasted. He said FEMA never did it like this. Kenna replied, ”Well, this is the way we do it in Texas .”

Fire fighting equipment needed repair? The auto shop at the High School ran 24/7 with local mechanics volunteering, students, and the firefighters fixing the equipment. Down one side of the school, the water tankers lined up at the fire hydrants and filled with water. Down the other side there was a steady parade of gasoline tankers filling trucks, dozers, tankers, cans, chain saws, and vehicles.

Mind you, all of this was set up by 2 Moms, Kenna and Tara, with a staff of 20 simple volunteers, most of them women who had sons, daughters, husbands, and friends on the fire lines. Someone always knew someone who could get what they needed- beds, mechanics, food, space. Local people using local connections to mobilize local resources made this happen. No government aid. No Trained Expert.

At one point the fire was less than a mile from the school, and everyone but hose volunteers were evacuated. The fire was turned. The Red Cross came in, looked at what they were doing, and quietly went away to set up a fire victim relief center nearby. They said they couldn’t do it any better.

Then FEMA came in and told those volunteers and Kenna that they had to leave, FEMA was here now. Kenna told them she worked for the firefighters, not them. They were obnoxious, bossy, got in the way, and criticized everything. The volunteers refused to back down and kept doing their job, and doing it well. Next FEMA said the HEB supplies and kitchen had to go, that was blatant commercialism. Kenna said they stayed. They stayed. FEMA threw a wall eyed fit about chewing tobacco and cigarettes being available in the commissary area. Kenna told them the firefighters had requested it, and it was staying. It stayed. FEMA got very nasty and kept asking what organization these volunteers belonged to- and all the volunteers told them “Our community”.

FEMA didn’t like that and demanded they make up a name for themselves. One mother remarked “They got me at my boiling point!” and suddenly the group was “212 Degrees”. FEMA’s contribution? They came in the next day with red shirts embroidered with “212 Degrees”, insisting the volunteers had to be identified, never realizing it was a slap in their face. Your tax dollars at work - labeling volunteers with useless shirts and getting in the way.

The upshot? A fire that the experts from California (for whom we are so grateful there are no words) said would take 2-3 weeks to get under control was 100% contained in 8 days. There was so much equipment and supplies donated, 3 container trucks are loaded with the excess to go and set up a similar relief center for the fire fighters in Bastrop .

The local relief agencies have asked people to stop bringing in donations of clothing, food, household items, and pretty much everything else because they only have 60 displaced households to care for, and there is enough to supply hundreds. Again, excess is going to be shipped to Bastrop , where there are 1500 displaced households. Wish we could send Kenna, too, but she has to go back to her regular job.

And that’s the way we do it in Texas !!!

In 7 years of casual blogging, none of my posts have garnered more responses than the AP photo which captured the "The Face of Evil" on 9/11.

The photographer should have gotten a Pulitzer Prize for this take, but the personification of evil is denigrated these days and the elitists would most likely pretend an image like this is not even worth mentioning and indeed should not be mentioned because it implies evil may exist which would allude to the existence of God.

Well, we can't have that!

So people deny God and evil.

Still, many people are fascinated with good and evil because both are presented to us each and every day. It's how we react to them is what's important.

When you see the face of evil, is that the side you want to be on?

The Canada Free Press routinely publishes thoughtful pieces you would never find in our left wing media. A sterling example is Kelley O'Connell's excellent article titled, Sources of Madness—The Insane Thinkers of the Modern Age.

O'Connell asks, "What is more characteristic of our modern day than crazy and wholly indefensible “policies”? Indeed!

Anything I might write about this brilliant piece would be an injustice to his work.

If you're unwilling to read about some of the founders/philosophers of this modern age in the first 3/4ths of his article, it would be a shame, but you could skip to his conclusion and get a pretty good grasp of what he has to say.

We might have been okay had we not thrown out common sense a generation or 2 ago. Pity! Especially for those who never learned to think for themselves.

My 7th Blogaversary

Not sure about the spelling of that B word and yes, this post couldn't be more self-congratulatory, but being here after 7 years this month, is pretty cool.

This year wasn't a real active one in this space and I attribute that to Face Book. Posting at FB became my substitute for blogging, but I've decided to become more active up here. If for no other reason, blogging provides an outlet for journaling and that's a good thing.

McCain/Kerry....This is what you get when you opt for "bi-partisanship"

THIS is what you get when someone like Sen. McCain and someone like Sen Kerry get together in the spirit of "bi-partisanship": the result is a leftist policy of funding what is clearly ending up to be a victory of the Muslim Brotherhood over the wished for democratic revolution.

This is just 1 reason Sen. McCain is seen as much more at home on the other side of the isle than his supposed home base in the republican camp.

Here's a pertinent and very telling quote by McCain:

"The American people, on a non-partisan basis, want to see this revolution succeed," McCain said. "The American people will live in a more secure world if this revolution succeeds."

Which revolution is he talking about? Does he mean that imaginary democratic revolution going on which is overthrowing radical Islamists or does he mean that revolution dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood? Which success is he rooting for?

How dare Sen. McCain pretend to speak for the American people. He doesn't speak for me and he never has. He doesn't speak for conservatives.

He speaks for those with whom he abides on the other side of the isle.

Thanks, Sen. McCain and Sen. Kerry. You can keep your supercilious, nonsensical views on "bi-partisanship" which only serve to promote the Leftist agenda. As for me and my conservative minions, we'll be content to be partisan and we'll kindly stay on our side of the isle.

Dallas keeps $2,000 found by honest teen

Dallas recently passed a law to keep money that goes unclaimed, instead of returning it to the honest person who found it. That law is bereft of common sense. What message does it send to anyone who finds something valuable? The idiotic law discourages honesty and screams out, "take the money and run, baby!"

Will they be shamed into changing the law? Only if they are inundated with calls and emails and called out on their foolishness.

A Third Party?

THIS, (52% of Republicans Want a Third Party) should scare the hell out of the republican leadership, such that it is, if only to wake up and get with the program.

What program, you ask? That conservatism is what is going to get them re-elected and to not realize that will the end of their "tenure."

The republican leadership doesn't like the demands of the Tea Partiers. Our message (I'm an unapologetic Tea Partier) is simple: quit spending; reduce the size of the govt by vast numbers; repeal Obamacare; repeal Obamacare; repeal Obamacare; and drill, baby drill right now and everywhere there's oil and gas.

We're not fooling. They may not like us, but we are a force to be reckoned with.

We look forward to ousting belligerently moderate republicans, many of whom hide under the guise of conservatism, but cower at the thought of battling Leftists in the media or on the other side of the isle.

We're watching you, republicans.

Mind you, we don't WANT a third party! It could be the worst thing that could happen to the country because it could very well insure a 2nd Obama term. Horrors!!!

This is why it's absolutely mandatory to clean up the republican party from within and elect new conservative blood in 2012.

The 2012 elections could very well be our last chance to save this country from total Obama style transformation which isn't working and cannot ever work because it is based on deception (a lie) and it is unconstitutional.

One of my FaceBook friends posted this Ultimate Dog Tease video and I can't tell you how many times I've watched it and laughed myself to tears. It's priceless!

Mexicans living in Mexico cross border to pick up U.S. Govt checks

Got an email this week from a buddy who lives in Phoenix. Here's some of what he had to say:

Our Gov (Jan Brewer) has done a great job on this issue, and demanding action from the Prez, but most news is negative with the boycotts and sports teams getting involved. If the nation really knew what it is like here...it was not like this when we moved here in '78. Go to the bank and nobody speaks English. Go to the Doctor, nobody speaks English. The schools in AZ are flooded with non English speaking students that we are required to teach. How can the class maintain a schedule when many in the class need help understanding what is being taught. Many times at work, I had crews show up that did not speak English. Communicating with them and getting the quality of work required was such a challenge. More than once, I threw an entire crew off my site. And if I could have called ICE or Sheriff Joe, without loosing my job, I would have.

There is a town on the border south of Yuma, San Luis, that has one of the largest, if not the largest Post Office in the State. On the date that the Government checks arrive in the mail, literally thousands of Mexicans come through the border crossing and pick up their checks and then return to Mexico. I have seen it. I have seen the Post Office. It is the largest building in the town. Also there and other border towns, at 7:00 each school day morning, school buses line up near the border entrances, school age kids come across, board the buses, attend American schools, after school, return by bus back to the border and return to home in Mexico. But you don't hear or see this on the news. Only occasionally do they talk about the drug mules, and human smuggling and the murders and home invasions at the border and now all the way to Phoenix. I have worked with non English speakers who came to the U.S. by hauling drugs. It's disgusting but I am made out to be a racist.

Did you catch that? Thousands are living in Mexican border towns and coming across the border EACH day to go to school and regularly come to the Post Office to pick up their govt check and RETURN HOME to Mexico!

The above photo is the San Luis Post Office which does such a booming business thanks to all the illegals collecting their U.S. Government checks so they can send the money back to family members in Mexico.

May Day 2010 - A Cry To God

If you are a praying person and/or a person of faith, please consider participating in the May Day 2010 event which will take place in front of the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, May 1st.

It's imperative that lovers of liberty seek deliverance from the One who granted us our unalienable rights, in this unprecedented time of national crisis.

Our freedom cannot continue and will not continue if we persist to thumb our nose at God and systematically remove him from our lives. Personally, and as as nation, we need to invite Him back into our lives.

We're losing our country and it's happening before our very eyes! We need to do everything in our power to hold on to the best form of government this world has ever seen. It's rapidly being transformed into an abusive government by the few for the few, instead of government of, by and for the people as it was prescribed. The most prosperous nation of all time has become lazy, apathetic, ungodly and oblivious to what has been going on for far too long. Only recently has the sleeping giant begun to awake.

Awake, we must, but we must also acknowledge the source of our blessings and freedoms; our Creator God. Now, before it's too late, we need to seek Him and beg His forgiveness.

I urge you to participate in any way possible. It might not be too late. Only with His help can we get this once great country back on track!

Pakistan Muslims Burn Christian Alive

You won't find this story in the NYT's or the Washington Post or in any other leftwing media in this country. No, you have to go abroad to get the real news. This horrific piece is in The Seoul Times. Read it and weep for those who boldly face tortuous deaths rather than renounce Jesus Christ:

In Pakistan it is clear that minorities reside in fear because non-Muslims are deemed to be inferior and the state apparatus is not working when it comes to protecting minorities from Islamic radicals. Therefore, another Christian was killed in barbaric circumstances because Arshad Masih, a Christian, was burnt alive.

Arshad Masih was brutally killed by Muslims because he refused to renounce the Christian faith. He died from burns which covered 80 per cent of his body and it took three agonizing days before he finally passed away from being burnt alive by Muslims.

It is clear that in modern day Pakistan you have elements within the Muslim community who have deep hatred in their hearts and who have little time for diversity or religious pluralism. Instead, some within the Muslim community desire to kill in the name of Islam and to victimize all non-Muslims and minority Muslim followers like the Ahmadiyya.

In 2009 a Muslim mob burnt Christians alive in Pakistan and you had many other cases of severe persecution. The ongoing violence and persecution is relentless and minorities can be killed or victimized on a whim.

Therefore, just like 2009, the same cycle of violence is being directed towards non-Muslims and others like the Ahmadiyya Muslims who face vilification and persecution by the dominant Sunni Muslim community.

Already in 2010 you have had major cases which have been highlighted and this applies to the brutal killing of a 12 year old Christian girl called Shazia Bashir and the burning alive of Arshad Masih.

According to Christian advocacy groups Shazia Bashir was raped and tortured to death and Sohail Johnson from Sharing Life Ministry Pakistan (SLMP) was scathing about the ongoing situation in Pakistan. For Sohail Johnson stated “….that 99 per cent of Christian girls from poor families are hired by wealthy Muslims, and are often physically, psychologically and sexually abused.” He continued by stating that “In some cases, their employers marry them off to Muslim servants, and forcibly convert them to Islam.”

Fess Parker, King of the Wild Frontier, dead at 85

Texas' native born son, Fess Parker, died today at age 85 (which just happened to be his wife's 84th birthday).

He was almost as iconic as the characters we remember him playing on TV: Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett to name just two. What Boomer didn't have a coonskin hat or two growing up, emulating Davy Crockett; or were we emulating Fess Parker playing Davy Crockett. Either way, they were terrific role models.

Fess Parker was one of the good guys. He will be missed!

It's Called the "Slaughter Strategy!" (You can't make this stuff up!!!)

That's right, the Slaughter Strategy named after Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-NY, is the methodology which would allow passage of the Senate bill without the House having voted on it. Hmmm...passage of a bill without a vote?

Here's the bottom line: For health reform to become law, the 2,700-page Senate bill somehow has to get through the House.

The trickery that Speaker Pelosi is concocting to get that done almost defies belief. It's aptly called the "Slaughter Strategy," after Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-NY, who cooked it up.

Here's how it would work: The House would "deem" the main Senate bill to have passed without directly voting on it as long as the House approves a companion bill of amendments to the Senate bill.

Got it? The original bill and the bill of fixes would be tied together on final passage. Enough House members hate provisions in the Senate bill that Pelosi can't round up 216 votes to pass the Senate bill alone.

The Slaughter Strategy (more likely describing what would happen to House members in November if they try this) would allow House members to say they never voted for the Senate bill, just the amendments to fix it.

Former Speaker Newt Gingrich had the best line: Last year, the House was passing bills without reading them. This year, they're passing bills without voting on them.

How is this possibly even remotely constitutional?!

The only thing apt about this procedure is its name; the Slaughter Strategy, which indeed will cause the dems to get "slaughtered" at the polls in November. But far worse, federally funded abortions will become the norm if this bill is allowed to pass, thereby slaughtering untold numbers of unborn babies.

The slaughter strategy indeed!

I was rummaging around the internet tonight trying to find a video of the speech Mark Levin gave last night at the Reagan Library...haven't yet found it but I did find a must see video tour of the Reagan Library right here. It's quick tour hosted by Gary Sinise with some terrific shots of some of the library's highlights.

The Reagan Library is a very special place. My wife and I visited not long after President Reagan died in 2004. The Air Force One exhibit was still under construction as was Reagan's final resting place shown in the video.

40 Days for Life

The murder of 3 professors at the University of Alabama in Huntsville by fellow professor Amy Bishop has caused me to wonder about all manor of things regarding this professor.

I wonder if she was a "birther" or "climate change denier." I wonder if she was a whacked out gun nut who stock piled guns and claimed NRA membership status. I wonder if she was a Glenn Beck aficionado and had all his books. I wonder if she was Tea Party extremist who worshipped at the Sarah Palin altar. I wonder if she was a radical pro-lifer who openly wished ill upon every abortion doctor in the country.

I wonder if Rush Limbaugh influenced her to cold heartedly murder 3 of her co-horts.

I wonder whose books were in her personal library. I wonder who she voted for in the last election.

I wonder if she was a right-wing fundamentalist Christian who upheld the 10 commandments and lived by the Golden Rule.

I wonder why she didn't know that Universities are gun free zones.

I wonder about these things because those on the Left are the first to assume these are typical characteristics of whacked out mass murderers but they are derelict when one who espouses their own ideologies ends up being the perpetrator.

As it turns out, according to a family member, she was a "far-left political extremist" who was "obsessed with President Obama to the point of being off-putting."

Top British scientist says UN panel (on Climate Change) is losing credibility.

Robert Watson, chief scientist at Defra, the environment ministry, who chaired the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) from 1997 to 2002, was speaking after more potential inaccuracies emerged in the IPCC’s 2007 benchmark report on global warming.

The most important is a claim that global warming could cut rain-fed north African crop production by up to 50% by 2020, a remarkably short time for such a dramatic change. The claim has been quoted in speeches by Rajendra Pachauri, the IPCC chairman, and by Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary-general.

This weekend Professor Chris Field, the new lead author of the IPCC’s climate impacts team, told The Sunday Times that he could find nothing in the report to support the claim. The revelation follows the IPCC’s retraction of a claim that the Himalayan glaciers might all melt by 2035.

The African claims could be even more embarrassing for the IPCC because they appear not only in its report on climate change impacts but, unlike the glaciers claim, are also repeated in its Synthesis Report.

This report is the IPCC’s most politically sensitive publication, distilling its most important science into a form accessible to politicians and policy makers.

It's not just the U.N. Panel on Climate Change that is losing (or has lost) credibility; it's anybody and everybody who continue to desperately cling to this bogus man-created myth of global warming, er, climate change for the sole purpose of redistribution of our wealth to third and fourth world thuggish dictatorships.

The list of climate change hoaxes are becoming too numerous to catalog in any one post. To the extent the hoaxers have any credibility at all shows how gullible and uninformed some of the masses are. However, the masses are rapidly catching on to the leftist head fake, with each new expose' which seem to be surfacing almost daily.

Rep. Smith's quote is kind of a "good news, bad news" situation. Obviously, it's appalling the president is very pro-abortion as are so many in his administration. On the other hand, it's wonderful to hear a United States Representative publicly promote prayer and fasting as a means of fighting this cultural war. Major kudos to him and any others in congress who may think along those lines.

Indeed, it's going to take much prayer and fasting to win the battle with those who are anti-life. If you're a praying person and you're anti-abortion, (I know, that's a non sequitur) consider kicking it up a notch or 2 by fasting. It's a powerful weapon to keep handy in your spiritual arsenal and if we ever needed reinforcements for the spiritual warfare swirling around us, it is now.

Hundreds Protest Western World's Largest Abortion Facility

On Martin Luther King day, hundreds of anti-abortion protesters peacefully walked the perimeter of what will be the Western World's largest abortion facility second only to China's abortion centers. The facility is located in Houston, TX and will be operated by Planned Parenthood.

The demonstrators quietly prayed as they walked around the "cash register shaped" building. Thousands more walked through nearby minority neighborhoods voicing their opposition to this clinic and warning people that this facility will be essentially targeting minorities in these neighborhoods.

Houston and the surrounding communities would be well served if they paid attention to the praying pro-lifers:

Since the Roe v. Wade decision of 1973, more than 50,000,000 abortions have been executed in this country. This estimated number, originally calculated by Heritage House in 2007, starts from statistics generated by the Alan Guttmacher Institute (AGI, which is Planned Parenthood’s Research Affiliate) and adds on AGI’s 3 percent estimate of the number of unreported abortions as a percentage of the total number of reported abortions each year.

After the 1973 Roe decision, the yearly rate of abortion rapidly climbed above the 1,000,000 mark by 1975, stabilized above 1,600,000 per year during the 1980s, and then declined somewhat to recent yearly rates above 1,200,000 per year. Over the 37 years since 1973, the average yearly rate of abortions has been about 1,350,000 per year. That’s roughly 26,000 per week. If abortions were executed at a constant pace throughout a six-day, 48-hour work week (they aren’t, but we’re just calculating averages here), the above weekly rate of 26,000 abortions is roughly equivalent to 540 per hour, 9 per minute ... or about one abortion every seven seconds.

That rate will almost surely increase. Why? Although supporters of the legal right to abortion (who would prefer to talk about “reproductive rights” in order to conflate abortion with the right to reproduce) claim that they want abortions to be “safe, legal, and rare,” in recent years, Planned Parenthood, the largest U.S. abortion provider, has been significantly increasing its capacity by opening very large abortion facilities at several new locations throughout the nation. Indeed, the business of providing abortions must be a highly profitable, “growth” industry (see "A New Pro-life Documentary: 'Blood Money'"). Furthermore, if abortion coverage becomes part of the pending federal healthcare bill and the bill passes . . . the yearly rate of abortions can only go up.

While Planned Parenthood’s innocuous-sounding name seems to suggest wholesome thoughts about the loving care of parents for their children, the stark reality is that Planned Parenthood’s primary income-generating service is abortion, which involves killing the parents’ offspring.

Go to The Salvation Army for the most cost effective way to help the people in Haiti. They need our help and in this economy it's difficult, if not impossible, to give when you're having trouble making your own ends meet. That being said, Americans are a generous people and we help people out because it's the right thing to do even when we can't "afford" it.

Every charitable organization in the world, including the United Nations and even some governmental agencies are going to be asking you for money to help in this cause. It's a worthy cause, to be sure, but before you give them your money discern how wasteful they are with the money they already have been given (or taken, as the case may be).

Give what you are able to give. The widow's mite will go farther at Salvation Army than virtually any other organization of its magnitude. The desperately destitute people of Haiti are begging the world to come to their aid; The Salvation Army, along with our prayers, are the best way to help those needy people.

Haiti is now reeling from a giant earthquake and guess who is rushing to come to their aid? That's right, greedy Americans; "white folks" of every color and creed. The same greedy Americans who zoomed to Indonesia right after the tsunami 5 years ago. Americans aren't only sending aid this very moment, but you can bet Americans across the country are praying for the Haitians throughout this horrific ordeal.

I'm tired of being told by money and power grabbing politicians that Americans are greedy. We're the most generous nation on earth with our money, our assets and our very lives that we've sacrificed so that oppressed peoples could be set free.

Years ago, at the end of the Viet Nam War, Canadian journalist, Gordon Sinclair wrote "A Tribute to the United States."That tribute, though somewhat dated, still holds up. In fact it's more timely now than ever in this post modern era of "trash America first. Watch it right here:

In my opinion the best way we can help the unfortunate people in Haiti is to contact The Salvation Army and ask them how you can help. They were the first to arrive after the tsunami in Indonesia and they have among the lowest operating costs of all the non-profits. Give them a hand and then keep these people in your prayers.

My daughter works in an environment abounding in creativity. Recently she got thoughtful note of appreciation from one of her co-horts. As a proud Daddy, it melted my heart; as a praying man, it challenged my trust in God. Was I willing to be surprised by the Big Guy?

Many years ago, I had a crazy-brilliant creative partner named Blain Johnsen. Lives in Woodstock, NY, now. We’re still friends. We were a very tight-knit team. Sometimes when were were on the road and eating at great restaurants — this was in the days of outrageous expense accounts — when it was time to order Johnsen would tell the waiter, “Surprise me.” He wouldn’t give a hint about his tastes, wouldn’t answer any questions. Just “Surprise me.” I’ve done that a few times myself, and it’s really fun. The waiters love it too.

Well, sometime last year I realized something: I’ll trust a waiter to surprise me, with a full expectation that it’s going to be a great experience, but I wasn’t trusting God to surprise me. I’d be real specific about what I’d pray for, as if there was reason to be suspicious of anything outside the realm of what I could imagine I needed. So finally I started saying, sometimes, to God, “Surprise me. I’ll let You decide what You think’s good today.” And surprise me He has. It’s been one astonishment after another. You’re one of them. At a time when I really needed a kindred spirit and a challenging intellect in my life, in you dropped out of the blue — such a completely unexpected person and in such an unexpected way. A wonderful surprise I could never have designed.

The specifics I would ask God for are so dull and uncreative compared to His surprises. This is fun. I’m grateful. Thank you.

Hunger for God

It's been awhile, but every now and then I'll post an essay written by a friend and/or associate. This piece was written by Loren Shields. Actually, I'm not sure we've met, but I went to high school with his wife 40 years ago and we've kept in touch over the years. Loren is an avid writer of things inspirational and has quite a large email readership of his almost daily feature, "Life Worth Living," which I intend to post from time to time.

I thought this most recent essay titled "Hunger for God" was timely. Christmas has come and gone; some observe Christmas as the celebration of Christ's nativity and most others celebrate it in a more secular fashion.

If you are seriously worshipful of Christ, this is essential reading. Love and adoration for Christmas and the Baby Jesus is one thing; hunger for God is quite another.

Loren points out that the church in America (ANY church) virtually parallels society in every way. That, in itself, should scare the hell out of God-fearing church goers. Read on church goers; this message is for you. Here's Loren's piece:

HUNGER FOR GOD

After finishing a business transaction about 18 years ago, I asked the man if he was a Christian. I never forgot his answer: “I don't have time to be a Christian!” I replied: “You don't have time NOT to be!” He was not opposed to God. He was just too busy with life, coupled with false concepts of God and what he might have to give up. I do not know what became of him. I can only hope that one day he latched onto God's grace to become a solid man of God today.

But what about those of us who already profess Christ as Savior and Lord? Do we have time to BE a Christian? Look around! There is little difference between believers and non-believers. The church virtually mirrors the world in everything – language, dress, music, entertainment, etc. The world has dictated the direction of the church and we have been eager to follow. Statistics reveal the church to be almost parallel to non-Christians with divorce, unmarried partners and pregnancies, convictions and beliefs, adultery, pornography, addictions, and more. We show the world LITTLE to be desired. The late Rev. Adrian Rogers stated that watching The Passion of the Christ moved him to ask himself, “Adrian, are the things you are living for worth Jesus dying for?”

In a recent Bible Study the question was asked: “Why are we not hungry for more of Christ?” Are we asking ourselves: What have I overlooked? What am I doing that I should NOT be doing? Or, what am I not doing that I SHOULD be doing? Do I easily give in to my own desires? Will I stand strong or shrink in a real test of my faith? How will I respond when the heat is turned up?

Recall the story of the frog sitting in a pot of cold water that is gradually heated. The process is slow and the frog doesn't even notice the rising temperature as it gets hot. Finally, the frog is boiled alive, cooked to death. A good metaphor for the slippery slope of compromise.

Mighty man of God King David fell hard as his eyes came off of God and onto Bathsheba. Reread the story. He was blinded for a long time before he came to his senses. Are we any different? When we enjoy what we know is wrong, we would prefer God keep His distance. But our God is not a distant God who watches us from afar. God is up close and involved in His people. God feels the hurt when we turn our back on Him; our doing so cannot be ignored. God sees and, just as with David, there will be consequences. As with Jonah, we can run but we can’t hide. “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows” (Gal 6:7).

Another great man, wise King Solomon, built a grand temple for God. His temple dedication prayer was simply awesome (1 Kings 8). God heard his prayer and charged him to be faithful and obedient, with consequences otherwise (1 Kings 9:1-9). But, “when Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart after other gods; and his heart was not loyal to the Lord his God” (1 Kings 11:4). And “Solomon did evil in the sight of the Lord, and did not fully follow the Lord” (6). “So the Lord became angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned from the Lord God of Israel” (9).

Consequences DID follow and the heat turned up for Solomon. “Now the Lord raised up an adversary against Solomon…” (14). “And God raised up another adversary against him…” (23). “Then Solomon's servant, Jeroboam…also rebelled against the king” (26). Conflicts – sent by God to bring Solomon back to a right mind and relationship. There ARE consequences to sin yet God’s patience, mercy and love give us space and time to repent (Rom 2:4; 2 Pet 3:9; Rev 2:21).

Yes, God sees! “For God is closely watching you, and he weighs carefully everything you do” (Pro 5:21 TLB). “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him” (2 Chron 16:9). “…But this is the one to whom I will look, to the humble and contrite in spirit, who trembles at my word” (Isa 66:2).

God's way says: “Abandon yourself wholly to Me. Choose Jesus, the only way to eternal life” (John 14:6; 6:47; Acts 4:12; 1 John 5:11). Man's way says: “Don't put all your eggs in one basket. All paths lead to God. There are other possibilities. Leave yourself an out, just in case.” (Col 2:8)

David learned God’s way IS best and he “did what was right in the eyes of the Lord” (1 Kings 15:5). He penned: “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Ps 139:23,24). Can we say that to God from our heart? Do we hunger for MORE of Him?

Just as valid for us today is Moses’ challenge to Israel: “Understand this now, and set it in your heart, that the Lord is God...there is no other” (Deut 4:39). Also just as valid for us today is Jesus’ warning: “If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned” (John 15:6).

Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, announced at the ClimateGate er, the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen today that the U.S. is going to contribute $100B each year to countries that viscerally hate us as witnessed by the rollicking cheers when Dictator-in-Chief, Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, spewed vitriolic epithets at us just yesterday.

That's right, he was the most applauded speaker thus far. He and his ilk hate us. They hate capitalism, but they demand that we share the wealth (we once had) with them.

That's what socialism and communism is all about...absconding with the wealth of those who have worked to achieve what they have and tragically, our "historical" president and those in his administration are out to appease and accommodate the very people who hate us and want to destroy us.

Appeasement and accommodation has never worked in the past; nor has socialism, but that won't stop the leftists, currently in power, from transforming this once great country to the socialistic welfare state it is rapidly becoming.

Hope and change was always a myth. Sadly, it's taking much too long for the masses to see what is going on under their unemployed noses.

Is it any surprise the leftists demand we pass their transforming bills posthaste without debate? I'm a Tea Partier and I couldn't be more upset with the gelded republicans in congress. No, I'm not a third party guy; I remember Ross Perot. He got Clinton elected.

We don't need to form a third party, we need to retake the republican party. But the leadership, such as it is, has become politically correct. That means they dare not offend anyone who isn't a White, Christian, heterosexual man. But it is certainly acceptable to offend those guys, because those guys are not on the list of acceptable minorities, even though they probably are a minority when counted among the multitude of minority special interest groups the PC crowd has cultured for more than a generation.

Go ahead and call them "angry white guys" but take a closer look at any Tea Party gathering and you'll be wise to take note of the "diversity" (to use a favorite divisive PC word) of the crowds.

The problem we have with mainstream republicans can be summed up with the conundrum so many of them are having with ClimateGate. Newt Gingrich, who made an embarrassing advertisement with Nancy Pelosi last year in an attempt to foist the green agenda upon us, hasn't even commented on ClimateGate (unless I missed it.) What's with that, anyway? What are they waiting for...more consensus? Can't they take a stand one way or the other?

All of the republicans should be making serious public waves (title waves!) about the most egregious hoax of this past couple of decades that is ClimateGate. But most have been completely silent.

Sen. Inhofe is the only one who comes to mind who came out immediately to decry the hoax of ClimateGate. Where are the other republicans?

Why aren't the republicans in congress publicly showing their outrage over this massive nationalized ObamaCare? Why aren't they showing outrage over Cap and Trade? Where's the outrage over the corrupt, radical and perverted czars which have been appointed in order to bypass congress? Why aren't they showing outrage over absolutely everything this outrageous administration does?

That, my friend is why Tea Partiers are growing in numbers and why many of the republicans in congress are becoming as irrelevant as the democrats.

While we tend to remember the little boy who called out "But he isn't wearing anything at all!" we often forget that the entire story was about far more than a vain ruler.

It begins, after all, with two con men who promise they can weave cloth of unsurpassed beauty to the enlightened but which would be invisible to any man who was unfit for his office or unpardonably stupid. They would then tailor that fabric into a fabulous suit of clothes for the emperor. How You Can Know a Story Really Has Merit

It hasn't always been the case, but these days there's one virtually sure way to know that a story has merit. It's simply this: when the MSM ignores stories that, in normal times, would rock this world and every thing in it, then you know there's something to the story they are conspicuously ignoring.

Here are a few blatant examples: the multiple undercover ACORN videos by James O'Keefe and Hannah Giles. The story is, in fact, ongoing but the MSM doesn't care a whit.

Then there are all those radical friends and associates President and Mrs. Obama have had over the years like "Rev." Wright and Bill Ayers as well as the many dubious czars that have been appointed such as Van Jones, an admitted communist, and Anita Dunn who extolled the virtues of Mao. The MSM showed no interest in these stories.

Most recently, of course, is the revelatory proof of the trumped up hoax of Global Warming. No, not a peep out of the MSM. These revelations have ramifications which are effecting our economy and every aspect of how we live our lives.

Today I emailed the News Bureau of WBAP (which carries Rush here in Dallas) and asked them why they weren't reporting on the earth shattering news that Global Warming has been proven to be fraudulent. Rick Hadley, News Director, replied, "Rush is talking about it right now. Isn't that reporting the story?"

Well, no, it isn't.

I emailed back that Rush has also talked about the Swine Flu on numerous occasions but WBAP has continued to include something about the Swine Flu in nearly every newscast for the past several months. Still no news about ClimateGate from the news bureau of the "Big BAP."

I could go on and on. Massive Tea Parties that went under-reported, the Town Hall Meetings throughout the summer, unprecedented govt spending, record unemployment, alarming debt, presidential ineptitude; all have been virtually covered up or ignored by a lapdog, propagandizing media best categorized by Rush as the "state-run media."

So keep this in mind when Talk Radio and the Internet call attention to something you know should be big news; if the MSM shows no interest in the story, you can bet there's something to it.

This one gets my vote for best weekend read. It's not something you would normally find on Drudge, and in fact, I didn't. It's from the hard working news junkies and reconnoiter artists at Pajamasmedia and the piece is titled, Jesus the Capitalist.

Many on the left often "scripture shop" to argue their opinion that Christ and the first Christians practiced socialism. Nay, nay collectivist breath! They did pool their assets in order to prolong their time together after the first Pentecost, but after a time, they returned to their communities. They didn't become collectivists, nor did anyone force anybody to sell personal property for the sake of others. If they did give, it was always a free-will offering.

If you have any curiosity whatsoever as to the real socio-economic recommendations set forth throughout the Bible, give this succinct article a few minutes of your attention. This guy obviously reads the Book and backs it up with footnotes.

Here are a couple of paragraphs:

A farmer had some crops that needed to be harvested and he hired day laborers, agreeing to pay them $100 for working a 12-hour shift. The farmer was in a hurry to get his crops harvested, so he went out again two hours into the shift and hired more workers. He continued to look for laborers throughout the day, bringing in more laborers every hour. Finally, at seven o’clock, one hour before sunset, he brought in a dozen more workers to help finish the job.

He then lined the workers up to give them their pay and he paid first the workers who had only worked an hour. Those who stood, sweat dripping from their bodies from a 12-hour shift, smiled when they saw the one-hour hires get $100. They figured that meant they’d get paid extra. But to their horror, the farmer also paid them only $100.

They confronted the capitalist with the charges of favoritism and unjust discrimination. Rather than offering arbitration, the farmer responded, “I’m not doing you any wrong. Didn’t you agree to work for $100? Take your money and leave. I’ll pay the people who worked an hour the same as I paid you. Isn’t it lawful for me to do what I want with my own money?”

Who is this capitalist exploiter of workers who thinks he can pay people whatever he wants?

Most theologians will tell you this landowner represents none other than Christ himself. The names, currencies, and exact quotes have been changed, but the essence of the story Christ told in Matthew 20 hasn’t. It’s a helpful story to remember when Michael Moore is out telling us that capitalism is anti-Jesus.

There are many other fine points the author points out in the Old and New Testaments which encourage capitalism and the free market.

Read the entire piece, it's just a couple of pages in length. Then, you might as well dust off the family Bible and start reading it...a few chapters a day and you can easily knock it out in 6 months or so. Do it! You'll be glad you did.
