How Would Jesus Vote ?
This is a popular question posed by religionists who correctly assume that Jesus is neither democrat nor republican. Which, it is extrapolated, illustrates why Christians shouldn't vote or be involved in politics. Huh? We could ask any number of similar implausible questions regarding Jesus' would be behavior or purchasing habits. What kind of car, what brand of sneakers, what kind of breakfast cereal.......blah blah blah. These are irrelevant questions to pose to a Diety who is above all this. But that's not to say that the future King of kings is apolitical. Anything but.
Jesus wasn't silent on politics in his lifetime. He was quite vocal! He excoriated the hypocritical Jewish hierarchy(the lawmakers of his time) in Jerusalem to the point that they sought to murder him. These were religious leaders but they were as political as they could be. And Jesus involved himself by publically condemning their acts of hypocrisy. Could one really argue that Jesus was politically neutral in these matters?
Jesus didn't participate in the state politics of his time because it wasn't his time to participate in them. Nor did Jesus and his disciples ever have the opportunity to vote for their favorite Roman dictator. Imagine if they WOULD have had that opportunity to choose between a dictator who really got off impaling Christians and another dictator somewhat more benevolent, I think they may have 'campaigned' against the impaler. That's just a hunch.
When we have the opportunity to vote for(or against) those who govern over us and we don't, do we just claim it was Jesus' will that some tyrant govern over us?
I have a far more compelling question for religionists and apolitical church leaders...which church would Jesus attend?
