Complacency....Ho Hum

The world is absolutely upside down. Things that used to be considered good for society are now considered to be bad. You could cite any number of examples, but I'll just use carbon dioxide as one example.  Who would have thought that CO2, which is necessary for life, is now a pollutant, so deemed by the Supreme Court, of all institutions. The global warming crowd and Leftists the world over will now seek to tax everything that produces CO2. Of all things to demonize for the sole purpose of taxing for redistribution of our wealth to 3d and 4th world countries. And this is but one example of upsidedownisms.

And why isn't there more outrage? Clearly, there are many reasons, but I think it's fair to say that camplacency is playing a large role in why more people don't seem to care about our topsy turvy culture run amok.

Complacency? Yeah, complacency!  Look at the meaning and weep!

com·pla·cen·cy
   /kəmˈpleɪsənsi/ Show Spelled[kuhm-pley-suhn-see]
noun, plural com·pla·cen·cies.

1. a feeling of quiet pleasure or security, often while unaware of some potential danger, defect, or the like; self-satisfaction or smug satisfaction with an existing situation, condition, etc

We're complacent, alright. Not all of us certainly, but the fact that people aren't marching in the streets over burgeoning government, spiraling prices, higher taxes and ever increasing government regulations, just to name a few, speaks woefully of our complacency.

Maybe there's so much complacency because of incrementalism. But the incrementalism of years gone by doesn't compare to the record setting transformative changes that have taken place during the Obama years.  Regardless of the speed of change, complacency seems to be the zeitgeist, at least among those who may not be paying attention.

The Bible warned the people of Israel about complacency:

  1. Amos 6:1
[ Woe to the Complacent ] Woe to you who are complacent in Zion, and to you who feel secure on Mount Samaria, you notable men of the foremost nation, to whom the people of Israel come!
  2. Zephaniah 1:12
At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish those who are complacent, who are like wine left on its dregs, who think, ‘The LORD will do nothing, either good or bad.’
  3. Proverbs 1:32
    For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them;

The false sense of security too many people have, has a stupefying and lulling affect. The predominant thinking can too often be that "it just can't happen in America. We'll come out of this....we always have before," so goes the vacuous reasoning.

We're at a scary dangerous intersection in this country and if we don't make the right turn (no pun intended, but I'll take the implication) we may be very close to the point of no return.

Ideology a la Prager University

Jonah Goldberg guest lectures on the topic of ideology at Prager University. So what's the big deal about ideologies? Well, the Left claims not to be ideological while accusing republicans of being ideologues.

We all have ideologies because we all have beliefs, regardless of what they may be. It's an interesting dichotomy and Goldberg makes it even more interesting in his 5 minute lecture.

Be sure to check it out.

"Surprise Me!"

This is a reprise of an entry I posted a couple of years ago or so. I stumbled upon it today when browsing my blog. It's one of my faves and I hope you like it too...

My daughter works in an environment abounding in creativity. Recently she got thoughtful note of appreciation from one of her co-horts. As a proud Daddy, it melted my heart; as a praying man, it challenged my trust in God. Was I willing to be surprised by the Big Guy?

Many years ago, I had a crazy-brilliant creative partner named Blain Johnsen. Lives in Woodstock, NY, now. We’re still friends. We were a very tight-knit team. Sometimes when were were on the road and eating at great restaurants — this was in the days of outrageous expense accounts — when it was time to order Johnsen would tell the waiter, “Surprise me.” He wouldn’t give a hint about his tastes, wouldn’t answer any questions. Just “Surprise me.” I’ve done that a few times myself, and it’s really fun. The waiters love it too.

Well, sometime last year I realized something: I’ll trust a waiter to surprise me, with a full expectation that it’s going to be a great experience, but I wasn’t trusting God to surprise me. I’d be real specific about what I’d pray for, as if there was reason to be suspicious of anything outside the realm of what I could imagine I needed. So finally I started saying, sometimes, to God, “Surprise me. I’ll let You decide what You think’s good today.” And surprise me He has. It’s been one astonishment after another. You’re one of them. At a time when I really needed a kindred spirit and a challenging intellect in my life, in you dropped out of the blue — such a completely unexpected person and in such an unexpected way. A wonderful surprise I could never have designed.

The specifics I would ask God for are so dull and uncreative compared to His surprises. This is fun. I’m grateful. Thank you.

Noah Webster on Civil Liberty

"The religion which has introduced civil liberty is the religion of Christ and His apostles, which enjoins humility, piety, and benevolence; which acknowledges in every person a brother, or a sister, and a citizen with equal rights. This is genuine Christianity, and to this we owe our free Constitutions of Government."

Resistance to Tyranny

Taken from the American Patriot's Bible, page 1272.....

In 1774, the Massachusetts Provincial Congress resolved:
Resistance to tyranny becomes the Christian and social duty of each individual...Continue steadfast, and with a proper sense of your dependence on God, nobly defend those rights which heaven gave, and no man ought to take from us.

John Adams on Obamacare

"Each individual of the society has a right to be protected by it in the enjoyment of his life, liberty, and property, according to standing laws. He is obliged, consequently, to contribute his share to the expense of this protection; and to give his personal service, or an equivalent, when necessary. But no part of the property of any individual can, with justice, be taken from him, or applied to public uses, without his own consent, or that of the representative body of the people. In fine, the people of this commonwealth are not controllable by any other laws than those to which their constitutional representative body have given their consent."
John Adams, Thoughts on Government, 1776
